Intro: Why The Front Kick?
The front kick is the most versatile weapon in all of martial arts. It can be utilized for speed, power, setups, finishes, creating space and closing distance. It is also one of the most underutilized in most MMA, kickboxing and Muay Thai schools and gyms at the novice or intermediate level. I even think it is underdeveloped in many traditional martial arts competitions or point based rulesets as well. This may come from it being difficult and unpleasant to introduce in sparring, but I suspect that it is because it is possible to utilize this kick even if you are very bad at it.
I came from a traditional martial background and was thrown to the sharks in an MMA school with little instruction or coaching, so I had to make due with what I had. I was lucky that what I called the "front snap kick" was a well developed part of my arsenal, and it was the only attack that I had major success with for a long time.I have always been shorter than my sparring partners and opponents, I have never been fast, I have strong hamstrings but poor hip mobility... so the front kick and variations of it became something I specialized in. Covering distance and remaining balanced and composed were also always my main focus in training as I was always was the one who had to work through getting hit to get close enough to land anything. Front Kick Focus is the culmination of these experiences.
