Probing, Poking and Posting Defined

Working The Jab

Varying the elements of your jab in order to control or damage your opponent.

These elements can include speed, range, level, power, trajectory, timing, rhythm, telegraph, or any other aspect of the jab over which you have control.

Probe

A movement intended to stimulate an opponent in order to gather information based on their reaction.

Probing with the jab is sometimes referred to as "pawing" the jab. It is often incorrectly characterized to new fighters and might be erroneously described as "slow" or "lazy." It is allowed be those things, but it may be done quickly and deliberately as well.

Poke

A strike that is intentionally thrown at an opponent's defense.

Poking with the jab could be described as a "stiff jab" usually, but the stiffness of it is not the only important aspect. Specifically, this strike is thrown independent of whether or not there is currently an opening.

Post

An extended limb used to restrict an opponent's options.

Posting in general is a deep, complicated subject. In the context of working the jab, it could best be summarized as using the lead hand to control their movement, influence their balance and limit what strikes they may use.

I'm a glossary kid and included this for other glossary kids, but you don't have to be one if it doesn't help you.
